Mandeville allocates $525,000 for Hurricane Ida cleanup work

The Mandeville City Council called an emergency meeting Sunday afternoon to allocate $525,000 for cleanup after Hurricane Ida completes its march across Louisiana.

The council, meeting via the Zoom video platform, voted 5-0 to add the money to its annual emergency expense budget. Ceres Environmental was awarded a $250,000 contract for debris cleanup, and Volkert Engineering was given a $250,000 contract for monitoring, which involves coordination of local, state and federal efforts after large-scale cleanups, including seeking federal reimbursement. RCL Consultants was contracted for $25,000 to help coordinate.

Mandeville officials hurried to hold the meeting, knowing the city might lose power as Ida continued moving inshore……..

Huge trees in, on houses in Mandeville in Hurricane Ida’s aftermath

The sisters, Sylvia Greco and Barbara Naquin, and their husbands spent an anxious night at the Hilton Garden Inn near Covington, wary of the damage they would find on Monday morning after Hurricane Ida’s ferocious winds swept across the north shore.

“We didn’t know how bad it would be, but we didn’t want to stay there through all that,” said Andrew Greco, who lives with his wife in Mandeville’s Lakewood Heights subdivision. “Pine trees and neighborhoods don’t mix.”…….

Old Mandeville cleans up from fierce winds and waves that battered the lakefront

Clayton Borne says that he “overbuilt” when he raised his house on Mandeville’s Lakeshore Drive right before Hurricane Katrina — so much so that it got some post-storm attention for how to build around water.

But Hurricane Ida’s powerful and long-lasting winds still put the stately 1840s-era home to the test. “I never felt the house vibrate before,” he said as he sat on his porch Tuesday morning.

He lost the banisters leading up the long flight of stairs to his front porch. Rain also got in when the winds against the slate roof lifted up the widow’s walk on the top of the house, allowing water to blow in……..

Pearl River compassionate in Hurricane Ida recovery

The Pearl River Town Council canceled its September meeting as Hurricane Ida recovery continued throughout St. Tammany Parish, but town leaders said most in Pearl River were spared the full impact of Aug. 29 storm.

“While we did have several homes that experienced significant damage from falling trees, etc., overall, we fared very well,” said Alderwoman Bridgett Bennett.

No major infrastructure damage occurred to any of the city’s facilities, she said, and, to her knowledge, all residents have had power and cable restored. Crews continue to work daily on efforts to remove tree and storm debris……..

The Lake House in Mandeville damaged after Hurricane Ida

Ida shuts down Mandeville’s Lakehouse, but for how long

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – One of Mandeville’s most historic structures took a beating from Ida and its future is unclear.

The building’s owner is confident that the Lakehouse restaurant can be back up and running in three months, but there’s still a lot of work to do.

The building which houses the Lakehouse restaurant was known for decades as Bechac’s. It dates back to 1830 and New Orleans developer Bernard du Marigny.

Sitting on the edge of Mandeville’s lakefront, protected only by a four-foot seawall, the historic structure has weathered dozens of hurricanes over the years. Now, those storms seem to be happening more frequently……..

Mandeville lakefront cleaning up and making repairs after Ida

MANDEVILLE, La. (WGNO) — Hurricane Ida’s surge no longer covers Lakeshore Drive in Mandeville. The storm’s water and wind left a layer of mud in the area along with all kinds of wind damage.

For many of the buildings that were sufficiently raised, the job of cleaning the storm’s mud simply requires a little pressure washing below the buildings. But lower buildings now have missing windows and doors from the storm surge, and the mud covers much of what’s inside them.

Also, many of the homes and businesses are missing shingles or have other roof damage from the storm’s high wind. Neighbors are waiting for power to be restored, but many trees are still blocking roads or leaning against power poles, blocking access for repair crews……..
